Help save Fraser Valley farmland

I have written quite a bit about the ongoing industrialization of rural farm land in South Surrey and why it’s important for those of us living in the Township of Langley to pay attention to.

Briefly, the City of Surrey has an insatiable appetite for industrial land and it has all but devoured the rural Campbell Heights area. What used to be productive farmland is now almost completely covered in warehouses. A prime piece of agricultural land (~305 acres) in Campbell Heights has managed to remain in use by local farmer Wes Heppell but, it too, is now under threat.

Thankfully the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) has initiated a proposal to bring the farmed lands into the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) with the intent to “preserve their availability for current and future agricultural use”.

Here’s what you can do to help:

  1. Submit a letter or attend the ALC’s public hearing on January 23rd and express your desire to preserve the remaining farmland in Campbell Heights.

  2. Stay up to date with what’s going on in your municipality and object to the conversion of farmland to industrial land. In the Township you can stay informed by reading Council agendas and minutes or by watching the live streams.
